Family in itself can be enough to drive us crazy sometimes and with a deranged girlfriend, even the most sensitive, soft spoken man, can find himself at the wrong end of an axe.
Todd Chipowski (Tyler Labine) is a teddy bear who takes a lot of crap from other people in his life, especially at work. However, putting his work behind him for a short period of time, all he wants is a nice relaxing time for him and his girlfriend, Cammie (Malin Akerman), at his parents cottage. With plans to propose to Cammie, Todd needs their time at the cottage to be perfect. However it’s abruptly interrupted by his brother, Salinger and his girlfriend who also want the cottage. Tension builds up, and Todd is pushed to the limit, and drives an axe through his brothers neck. Turns out though, he as a pretty cool girlfriend who wants to help him, but at the same time she turns out to be a self centered mad woman.
Evaluation: I knew going into this that Tyler Labine usually expresses an “iffy” sense of humor in a lot of his work, however I can’t help but to enjoy movies and shows that he is in. For this film it was hit and miss as a whole, but some parts did have me going and I in no way regret my decision to watch it. There was an irritation to the film, and it’s a guy thing, but I couldn’t decide whether I though Cammie (Malin Akerman) was attractive or not. She is, but at the same time she isn’t. Though my decision is still unclear, she was perfect for this role seeing as the two realized they were simply committing to each other despite the lack of love or connection.
The cluelessness of Todd throughout the film is priceless. Labine was the perfect actor to take on the role. He generally does have that innocent aspect to him that sets him apart from others. It is however, difficult to mix slashing and comedy. We have seen it done before properly, and sadly any good combination puts this film to shame. It didn’t have the right mix when it comes down to it. I either felt like I was watching a crime or slasher film, or I felt like I was watching a comedy. Alternating back and forth can get tiresome, and ultimately tarnish your overall opinion of the movie.
See the police woman in the picture below? I despised her. I have no idea why, but when I first saw her I was thinking “You’ve gotta be kidding me”.
Total Abstract Rating: 70% I could see myself watching it again, but may not be able to completely explain why.
