I’ve never done this before, but I have always been a fan of Minecraft movies on Youtube, and I finally found one that is blog post worthy, on a channel that takes this very seriously.

The plot: When John (Engineer 108) arrives at Mining Facility 12 (an abandoned facility) for a routine checkup, he quickly discovers that he is not alone.

Having watched more Minecraft movies than I care to share, this one certainly stands alone in it’s creativity and realism. Never before has a gaming movie felt so real. I honestly felt like I was watching an actual television show/movie. The voices were clear and the animations were professional. However, this isn’t why I found it so compelling. I’ve come across plenty of channels that feature the same level of hard work and talent, but I haven’t found many that can properly put together a pleasing movie.

The plot was suspenseful (for a 10 minute movie), and was able to grab the viewers attention and horror senses without the use of those ridiculous jump scares. Continuously applied, jump scares are still used in excess by just about anyone with a camera who’s looking to make a horror film these days. A true horror movie would not need this pathetic tactic, which is why Quarantine (a short gaming movie) is kicking the asses of several actual “horror” films of today.

Not all is perfect though, because the ending is rushed, and quite honestly, not very exciting. It’s as if they are airing up a balloon more and more as we watch, only to disappointingly and abruptly let it out. I feel that there should have been more action incorporated into the movie. Yes, we finally see who was in the facility with John (and if you aren’t familiar with Minecraft you probably won’t know who it is). But there is only a small amount of panic before John discovers the “intruder”, and nothing at all to see following the discovery. We are only left with the understanding that John is now gone.

Lastly, I’d like to mention the ending scene, which was a very nice touch. With John being gone, we know that eventually there will be other victims, and so the movie gives us a glimpse at the next poor sap who arrives at Mining Facility 12, just as John did.
